For our first poutine experience, we had to go to the famous La Banquise 24h so one night, Michael's birthday night actually, we set off to the Plateau for dinner. I'd read that this place was bustling and often the queue for a table went out the door. We were lucky and we walked straight in to a table in the courtyard out the back.
Menus in our hands, we wondered why we would need them if we were just going to order the poutine, and then we saw the list of toppings on the menu. Extensive. It looked just like a pizza menu. So after great deliberation we decided to have the plain old original poutine. After all, we were poutine virgins so we had to start with the basics.
Poutine is a weird dish. Nobody really knows where it originated but everyone likes to claim it's theirs. Ordinarily I would baulk at having a meal of hot chips covered in gravy and melted chunks of cheese curd. But when in Rome and all that. And believe it or not, I actually liked it! If you come to Montreal you have to try it!
Just..maybe not to La Banquise. Read my coming posts to find out why...
