A man does what he must - in spite of personal consequences, in spite of obstacles and dangers and pressures - and that is the basis of all human morality. (Winston Churchill)
So, for this post I thought I'd talk about deodorants. This was actually something that Michael noticed when we first arrived and he needed to buy some. He went into the supermarket discovered that there isn't much in the way of personal hygiene products in the aisles of the then-local IGA downtown, nor the now-local Metro. The basics at a little more than the price you'd feel comfortable spending.
So, first things first really. Don't shop for personal hygiene products in supermarkets in Montreal. Also, don't bother trying to find a wide range of other household products either. It seems supermarkets are limited to small sections of those kinds of products and focus more on food. Ha!
The place to go for these things is the Pharmaprix, otherwise known as the local chemist and more. That's it, it's your local Priceline with more. And so when you need deodorant or stain remover or even dishwashing detergent, you'll find it at the Pharmaprix, not at the Metro. And if you're there and remember that you need something for dinner, you'll probably find some frozen meals or cereal or something too.
Michael's beef with the deodorants on the market here: they're all roll-on. Who uses roll-on these days? (Answers in the comments, if you please!) I don't know about men, but I think women use roll-ons. Maybe it's 50/50? I don't know. Should do a survey on that. But I would say for men, and this is just guessing, that they would be happier with a spray deodorant than a roll-on. Because of all the hair there. But that's me. When I've been too lazy to shave my underarms I'd be hesitant to use a roll-on too.
Michael being Michael did some research into this phenomenon and came up with lots of forums where Canadians were complaining about the lack of roll-ons in other countries. Weird, but it makes more sense now that I've seen the Pharmaprix shelves. And when I think of the shelves in Australia too, there are mostly spray-ons for men and a mix for women. Obviously it's a different market here than in Australia.
So now Michael has to use roll-on just like all the other Canadian blokes and I will have to eventually like all the Canadian women. I'll have to make a mental note to buy a nice razor to go with my new roll-on...
